Astrid made a mental note that NESS needed to hire that man away from Schlinck's Company.
Hans Wolfe seemed to have heard them, because Bretagne's men stepped forward. More of Schlinck's men shuffled to their left. Astrid took two steps forward.
"This is not over!" the big man shouted. He turned. "Come on."
Astrid watched them go. It started out as a mob, but the grizzled man, not the big man, sent two men scurrying forward on point while he and another man took up a rearguard position.
Astrid tracked them with the Colt. When they drew even with the Tech Center greenhouses, she relaxed her left hand and set the slide lock safety. Once the last of Schlinck's men were out of sight, she set the second one, the grip safety, and lowered the .45 to her side.
Bretagne's men climbed up the hill where Astrid and the library security guards stood.
"We should give them a few minutes, Miss Schäubin." He turned to one of his men. "Bavarello, go to the NESS office and make sure Girot and Origgi are okay."
"Ja, Sergeant."
"Dank, Sergeant Wolfe." Astrid turned to the security guards. "Dank sehr."
"I am not happy about this," the first guard declared. "We will call the polizei."
"They are busy," Wolfe told him. "Miss Schäubin was on her own and had to guard two locations. She made a stand at the crossroads."
"Those men could have shot at her, missed, and hit die kinder!"
Astrid felt bad about that. She had run a calculated risk.
Wolfe snorted. "In front of a stretch of wall with no windows? How many rounds did these walls stop during the Croat Raid? Exzellent position, Miss Schäubin. Schlinck's men were going to have to come up that slope which put their backs to us."
"Dank sie." At least Sergeant Wolfe thought she had done the right thing.
"Sergeant Wolfe, Neustatter, my brother, and my cousin told me about you, but how do you know who I am?"
Hans Wolfe laughed. "Miss Schäubin, everyone in the business knows who you are, especially after the National Guard operation out this way. Well, maybe not the Hibernian Battalion. It is always hard to tell with them."
He turned to the security guard. "But, ja, let us go call the polizei. They can at least tell us what is happening downtown."
"Wolfram!" A short woman in a nurse's uniform ran out of the Tech Center. "LPN class! We're needed at Leahy right away!"
"Go on, Wolfram," Astrid told him. "Dank dir!"
Astrid paused long enough to collect her shell casings from the ground, then entered the high school building with Sergeant Wolfe and the two security guards.
The first guard led them straight to the administration center. A long counter bisected the room. One secretary was seated behind the counter itself while two more were at desks back behind it. The secretary at the counter looked up, as did one of the others.
Astrid approached the counter with a security guard on either side of her.
"Good morning, Ms. Lynch. Gut morgen, Frau Greiner."
"Astrid! How are you?" Magdalena Greiner greeted her with a smile.
